When the dense helium cores of two red giants collide, the merger could produce high-energy neutrinos, finds a study in Physical Review D. IceCube could expect about one such neutrino from a single merger up to 180,000 light years away. Read the study: https://t.co/obsr6czDzG https://t.co/Wt6sclAR4x

Why does anything exist? After the #BigBang, antimatter should have canceled out matter. So how did matter become dominant? A new theory focuses on a forgotten particle: the decoupled heavy #neutrino. https://t.co/JvE9T3RqJV 📸 NASA/ ESA/ J. Hester and A. Loll/ Wikimedia. https://t.co/U19MzWTz9c

A long-ignored gāst neutrino may have briefly ruled the early firmament, explaining why matter exists. Too weak to matter, strong enough to rewrite expansion, classic underdog cosmology. The particle dismissed as “too feeble to matter” may have been the temporary landlord that let matter win the annihilation war. In the minimal type-I seesaw, the standard mechanism for tiny neutrino masses, the heaviest right-handed neutrino is usually discarded. It couples so weakly it barely affects light-neutrino masses or leptogenesis. Roshan and Show (Southampton and IIT Kanpur) show this overlooked particle can still dominate the post-Big Bang energy density. Its long lifetime drives an early matter-dominated era. Faster expansion delays the temperature where charged-lepton Yukawa interactions equilibrate, postponing when lepton flavors remember themselves. This lets lighter right-handed neutrinos generate the observed baryon asymmetry in the unflavored regime, a window previously closed. The modified expansion also imprints spectral breaks on primordial gravitational waves and alters dark-matter production. The early cosmos as a cooling furnace. Radiation normally sets the expansion via photons and relativistic particles. This decoupled neutrino, once non-relativistic, behaves like dust and briefly reigns until it decays. In that window the Hubble rate exceeds pure radiation domination, so interaction rates keeping lepton flavors coherent fail earlier. Standard equilibration temperatures (roughly 5 × 10¹¹ GeV for the tau, lower for muon and electron) drop by nearly an order of magnitude in benchmarks (M_N3 ~ 10¹⁴–10¹⁵ GeV, lightest neutrino mass ~ 10⁻¹² eV). A lighter N1 (~10¹¹ GeV) can thus produce the lepton asymmetry before flavors equilibrate; sphalerons convert it to baryon asymmetry. Entropy from the heavy neutrino’s decay dilutes the asymmetry, requiring tuned parameters, yet the scenario remains viable. It invents no new particle, merely revives a neglected one already required by the seesaw. It does not claim this is the only solution to the baryon asymmetry, but that the heaviest sterile neutrino’s overlooked cosmological role changes leptogenesis boundary conditions and leaves testable gravitational-wave signatures. Future detectors (LISA, DECIGO, ET, SKA) could detect the spectral break encoding the decoupled neutrino mass and lightest active neutrino mass. Low-energy experiments sensitive to m_ℓ ~ 10⁻¹² eV offer a complementary probe. No fields beyond the minimal seesaw are needed.
