Pulsed laser.

Scientists turned ordinary plastic into tiny diamonds using powerful lasers. The recovered diamonds are on the order of a few thousand atoms each and can potentially be modified with other elements. It’s a lab-scale materials trick, not a factory process, but it shows unconventional routes to extreme materials. Plastic → diamond under laser conditions.
Scientists have demonstrated how changing nanoparticle size can dramatically improve the conversion of plastic waste into valuable chemicals. Published on 17 October in Nature Communications, the research investigates ruthenium nanoparticles supported on nitrogen-doped carbon. https://t.co/L73BX8Hbi9 Particles averaging 2.4 nm achieved a remarkable 95.5% yield of p-xylylenediamine, an industrial chemical produced from waste PET plastic. Smaller and larger particles favoured competing reactions, reducing selectivity. The researchers also investigated post-consumer and mixed polyester waste. Conclusion: Precise control of nanoparticle dimensions could become an important tool for making chemical recycling more selective and commercially attractive. Approximate adjacent market — global chemically recycled plastics: 2026 US$1.0 billion; 2031 US$2.2 billion. The 2031 figure is extrapolated from a published 17.4% annual growth forecast; it is not a forecast for PXDA production specifically.
